Abstract

This research was carried out to determine whether dominant morphological features could be used instead of disease tests as markers of lines resistant to stem rust ( Puccinia graminis tritici Eriks. and Henn.). Of the 13 species used as material in the hybridization program, 9 were non-resistant and 4 were resistant. Experiments were carried out separately, because of the different genetic structure in seedling resistance and adult resistance. It was determined that in view of the morphological characters examined; auricle colour, leaf colour and leaf waxiness in seedling resistance, and grain glumaceouss, spike brittleness and awn dentiness in adult resistance were dominant and they can be used in stem resistance studies as marker characters.
