In this study, compatible and noncompatible stem taper equations were developed for alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) depending on 510 sample trees data taken from alder stands in Black Sea Region. For estimating only stem tapers of sample trees, the noncompatible stem taper equation developed by Kozak (10) was the best according to average residual (bias), standart deviation of residuals (precision) and percent variation explained criteria, among all compatible and noncompatible stem taper equations tested in this study. Besides, according to the same criteria, for estimating stem tapers, total tree volume and volume ratios together, the compatible stem taper equation developed by Max and Burkhart (17) was the best among all the compatible stem taper equations.
