Abstract

Between 1982 and 2025, the number of extant wild mammal species worldwide rose from 4170 to 6706. The Turkish mammal fauna also showed a similar trend, with the number of mammal species listed for Türkiye rising from 89 to 173 in just 33 years, from 1989 to 2021. A shift in species numbers like this calls for regular updates to Türkiye’s mammal species lists as well as the preparation of new checklists. Apart from changes in the number of species, numerous taxonomic changes and rearrangements also lead to changes in mammal lists. We arranged an updated mammal checklist by reviewing the literature and identifying additions, deletions, and changes in the mammal fauna of Türkiye. This study presents the occurrence of 177 wild mammal species, comprising 165 terrestrial and 12 marine mammal species in Türkiye. Among them, 13 are endemic and 12 are regionally endemic terrestrial mammal species to Türkiye. Türkiye also has 10 domestic mammal species. Furthermore, it is anticipated that 16 mammal species with close geographic distribution ranges to Türkiye may be reported in future checklists for Türkiye.
