Abstract
The regulation of solutes occurs not through the skin but via salt glands located in the nose and kidneys in reptiles and birds. This study aimed to investigate and elucidate the histological structure of the salt glands in domestic geese, and to characterize their ducts and cellular components in detail.Crossmon’s triple staining technique, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), combined alcian blue, and Kluver– Barrera stains were used for the histological investigations. The outer surface of the organ was enclosed by connective tissue, and the capsule subdivided the tissue into bulbs. Nerve fibers and endings were observed within the capsule and in the connective tissue between the bulbs. Each bulb had a central canal and was surrounded by secretory acini opening into it. Intermediate ducts were present between the central and main ducts, transitioning from single-layered to multilayered columnar epithelium. Lamp glass-shaped cells, considered receptor cells, were identified among the epithelial cells of the intermediate ducts. Few AB+ and PAS-cells were observed in the central tubules and main duct, with greater numbers in the intermediate tubules. A review of the literature revealed that the intermediate tubules and receptor cells identified in this study had not been previously reported. Therefore, this study is significant for enhancing the understanding of tubule structures and neural stimulation, and for identifying intermediate tubules and receptor cells for the first time.
