Abstract

In this study, a total of 160 one day old broiler chicks were devided into two groups consisting of 60 chicks in control group and 100 chicks in treatment group. The birds in treatment group received 50 ppm, 25 ppm, 37.5 ppm and 50 ppm danofloxacin via drinking water between the days during 0-7, 8-21, 22-35 and 36-42 respectively. Live weight, liver weight, serum total protein, albumin, globulin, copper, zinc and magnesium levels as well as \gamma-GT, GOT and GPT activities of 15 birds from control group and 25 birds from treatment group were determined on days 15, 21, 35 and 42. Histological examinations were carried out on liver samples. The live weight of birds in treatment group was slightly higher than controls troughout the experiment, but only the difference on day 35 was found statistically important. In histological examinations, lipid infiltration in liver cell was determined on days 15 and 21 in both groups. Although, the lipid infiltration decreased in control group on days 35 and 42, it countinued in treatment group. Compare to control group, there were no statistically significant differences in liver weight, serum total protein, albumin and magnesium levels in treatment group. The globulin level on day 35, the activities of \gamma-GT on days 21 and 42, GOT on day 42 decreased but the activity of GPT on day 42 and the levels of zinc on day 15 increased and copper on day 21 increased and decreased on day 35. In conclusion, it was found that long period danofloxacin application for protective and growth promoting purposes results in fatty liver in broilers.
