Abstract

Background/aim: The study aims to systematically analyze the body of literature concerning the effects of colchicine on the cardiovascular system, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the current knowledge and highlighting the clinical and scientific relevance of colchicine in this field.

Materials and methods: Data were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database on November 17, 2024. The search terms included “Colchicine” AND "Cardiovascular effects" OR "Cardiovascular diseases" OR "Heart diseases" OR "Coronary artery disease" OR "Myocarditis" OR "Pericarditis" OR "Atherosclerosis" OR "Heart failure" OR "Myocardial infarction." No restrictions were applied regarding publication date or language, ensuring the comprehensive retrieval of relevant data. Publications were categorized according to their document type and indexed within various WOS categories. Additionally, a co-occurrence analysis of keywords was conducted using VOSviewer 1.6.18.

Results: A total of 979 publications have been identified regarding the effects of colchicine on the cardiovascular system, published between 1981 and 2024. There has been a significant increase in research since 2015. Most publications were in the Cardiac Cardiovascular Systems category. "Colchicine" is the most frequently used keyword, appearing 327 times. USA is the leading country with 308 publications. USA, Italy, Canada, and China have significant role in global research collaboration. Tardif (2019), Nidorf (2020), and Ridker (2016) are the most cited publications.

Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis demonstrates the increasing importance of colchicine as a therapeutic agent in the management of cardiovascular disease.
