Abstract

Background/aimA risk factor assessment evaluating the susceptibility of cerebral aneurysms (CA) to rupture has not yet been established. Therefore, the clinical management of unruptured CA remains uncertain. Our aim was to assess whether arterial stiffness is associated with the development of rupture in patients with cerebral aneurysms.Materials and methodsAfter magnetic resonance angiography, 49 patients with cerebral aneurysm and subarachnoid haemorrhage and ruptured cerebral aneurysm detected by digital substraction angiography were included in the study. Arterial stiffness was measured using the VaSera VS-1000 vascular scanning system, expressed as cardio-ankle brachial index (CAVI). CAVI values were compared between patient groups.ResultsThe mean age of the patients with cerebral aneurysm was 51±11 years, while the mean age of the patient group with haemorrhagic cerebral aneurysm was 58±12 years (p=0.308). L-CAVI and R-CAVI were significantly higher in the group with haemorrhagic cerebral aneurysm (p<0.05 for both). Cardio-ankle vascular index values were positively correlated with the hemorrhagic cerebral aneurysm group (p < 0.05).ConclusionIn our study, increased arterial stiffness was associated with increased risk of haemorrhage in patients with cerebral aneurysm. This result demonstrates the importance of the evaluation of arterial stiffness as an informative parameter in terms of treatment and follow-up decisions in patients with cerebral aneurysms.
