Abstract

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is an easily dismissable cause of lower back pain (LBP). Recently has gained attention as the source of pain and surgeries addressing this issue have gained attention among surgeons. Classically open fusion surgery was used for the pelvic and sacral fractures to stabilize the structure and then open SIJ fusion surgery started to be used for pain management until the discovery of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). MIS offered fast and effective pain relief with significantly less risk of adverse events following the surgery. Therefore gaining more and more attention each day among surgeons. Our literature review aims to provide insights and obtain current advancements in the literature regarding MIS SIJ fusion. The current literature clearly shows the superiority of MIS over open surgery with satisfactory patient outcomes and significantly lower complication rates. With the advancement of navigation and the inclusion of robot assistance MIS SIJ fusion will become more ergonomically comfortable for surgeons and shorten the learning curve for new training surgeons worldwide.
