Abstract

Background/aim: In Graves’ disease (GD), an autoimmune disease, antibodies targeting the TSH receptor cause the production of excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. A significant association has been reported between low 25(OH) Vitamin D3 (VitD) levels and various autoimmune disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of VitD deficiency and replacement therapy on laboratory and clinical parameters in GD patients. Methods:Fourty GD and 37 healthy control patients were included in this study. Patients with GD were divided into two groups, and the first group was given only antithyroid treatment (n:18), and the second group was given antithyroid treatment plus VitD replacement (n:22). Clinical and laboratory data of all participants were compared at the time of diagnosis and 3 months after treatment. Results: Baseline serum VitD levels in patients with GD were significantly lower than the baseline serum VitD levels of the control group (16.1±9.9 ng/ml vs 22.2±8.5 ng/ml, p <0.005). A significant improvement was observed in serum VitDlevels in patients with GD who received VitD replacement therapy after three months (14.6±8.3 ng/ml vs 40.4±17.2 ng/ml, p<0.001). A significant increase in serum TSH levels and a significant decrease in serum fT3 and fT4 levels were observed at the end of three months in patients with GD who received both antithyroid treatment and antithyroid plus VitD replacement. However, no significant effect of VitD replacement on serum TSH, fT3 and fT4 values was determined. There was no difference in serum TRAb levels between the groups that received and did not receive VitD replacement. Conclusion:Although VitD deficiency was detected in GD patients, no significant accelerating effect of VitD replacement on thyroid hormone levels was observed. Our results need to be confirmed with studies with larger patient numbers and longer follow-up periods.
