Transparency Characteristics of Distributed Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifiers (DEDFAs) for Soliton Transmission

Abstract
The detailed transparency pump power, noise figure (NF) and signal distribution charactrestics of long span distributed erbium doped fibre amplifiers (DEDFA) are reported. The results exhibit the amounts of pump power and the corresponding noise figure at transparency as functions of signal power and link length, and thus provide the basis of determining the trade-off between the pump power requirements for transparency, noise figure, signal excursion and link length. These results also confirm the success of the design of our DEDFA links, that exhibit the lowest noise figure and the signal excursion characteristics for the pump power levels practically available, to use in future soliton transmission systems.
