Achene Micromorphology in Some Species of Carex (Cyperaceae), Studied With Scanning Electron Microscopy

Abstract
The structure of achene epidermal cells and their silica contents in ten species of Carex are illustrated and described here for the first time using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The species examined in this study exhibited a wide variety of achene epidermal features, and the epidermal patterns of each taxon were distinctive. Achene micromorphology in the genus Carex can be used as a taxonomic criterion, but it should be combined with other features when diagnostic determinations of species are carried out.
