A special issue dedicated to Prof. Dr. Aykut Barka

“From coseismic surface rupture to long-term behavior of faulting”


Aykut Barka (1952–2002) was an internationally distinguished Turkish earth scientist in earthquake research, a pioneer in cultivating the Active Tectonic studies in Turkey, and the founder of the “Active Tectonics Research Group of Turkey (ATAG)”. His contributions, including furthering our understanding of the behavior of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), using GPS studies to measure directly tectonic deformation throughout the Eastern Mediterranean Region, emphasizing the role of stress transfer and triggering along NAFZ, and advancing public awareness of earthquake hazards in Turkey are exemplary. His fault zone studies were focused on understanding the temporal and spatial evolution of active faulting through geologic, geodetic, and seismic observations. Twenty years after his passing, we are pleased to dedicate this special issue to him in honor of his passion for earth science, and his long-term dream of protecting the Turkish people from the losses they have suffered from earthquakes for many centuries.

Aykut recognized that a multidisciplinary approach is vital to understanding the temporal and spatial slip behavior of faults, and he recruited scientists from around the world to incorporate new technologies and analysis approaches to Turkey’s earthquake problem. Accordingly, we invite contributions covering the full earthquake cycle using observations obtained from geologic, geodetic, and seismic observations, and from regional geodynamic studies that provide the framework for fault interactions. We seek a wide variety of studies presenting insights into several phenomena related to faulting processes within a single seismic cycle, and/or integrating contributions from multiple cycles over longer time periods.

Specifically, we invite the global earth science community to contribute to this special issue, focusing on, but not limited to the following potential topics:

  • Seismic, geodetic, and geological constraints on the spatial and temporal character of strain accumulation, including interseismic, coseismic, and postseismic processes, and fault creep
  • Earthquake cycle, earthquake recurrence, strain partitioning within broad plate boundary zone fault systems
  • Paleoseismology, including observations of surface-rupturing events to constrain the short- and long-term slip history of active faults
  • Morphotectonic analysis of active faults
  • Observational and modeling approaches to imaging transient and long-term tectonic deformation
  • Observing and modeling broad scale crustal deformation by InSAR and GPS.
  • Mechanical properties of faults (i.e. creep, slow slip, supershear)
  • Factors affecting patterns of earthquake ruptures (i.e. fault segmentation)
  • Modelling dynamic and static stress transfer during the earthquake cycle
  • Probabilistic seismic hazard evaluations

Please send a preliminary title, author list, and a short descriptive paragraph outlining the scope of your proposed manuscript to the chief guest editor, Dr. Gülsen Uçarkuş (ucarkus@itu.edu.tr) by October, 30th, 2021.

The anticipated manuscript submission deadline is February 1st, 2022 with the aim of getting the special issue electronically published in 2022.

Differential and difference equations are very useful tools for adequate modelling of dynamic processes. It leads us to further studying various types of these equations and related initial and boundary value problems, to develop approximate methods for their solutions as well as to their successful applications to real-world problems. 

This special issue invites papers that focus on recent and novel developments in the theory of any types of differential and difference equations and inclusions, especially on analytical and numerical results for fractional ordinary and partial differential equations.
